Nearly 15% of Whatcom County households use SNAP benefits—equivalent to at least $4 million in federal food assistance every month that has now vanished overnight. Statewide, SNAP provides more than $170 million in food assistance each month.
By contrast, the Bellingham Food Bank spends $4 million in an entire year on food purchasing—more than any food bank in Washington—which makes it impossible for them to cover a gap that large alone.
To help close the rapidly expanding need, The Hotel Leo is hosting an emergency fundraiser and food drive on Thursday, November 13 at 5:30 PM in The Crystal Ballroom at The Hotel Leo.
The fundraiser has already received $12,818 in pre-event donations, with a goal of raising $50,000 to feed hungry families in Whatcom County now and through the holidays.
